Art and science symposium for renewable energy technologies featuring STUDIOLAB workshop “Biotricity – how to make electricity from waste-water
RENEWABLE LAB is a 3-day symposium that will take place from July 26 to July 28 in 'rural lab' settings of North-East Latvia. The symposium will gather together artists and scientists who will introduce with their artistic explorations and scientific research in the field of renewable energy technologies. The participants will also discuss the potential of art and science collaboration, and will work on developing collaborative ideas by combining these both perspectives in their quest for a sustainable future.
The Intro Day (July 26) will focus on developing a TECHNO-ECOLOGICAL perspective that will faciliate a theoretical background for the symposium activities. The participants will be discussing how to re-approach cultural, social and ecological sustainability through artistic explorations and techno-scientific innovation. The programme of Intro Day will also include talks by scientists from Hydrogen Lab, Institute of Solid State Physics and Faculty of Biology at Latvian University, as well as presentations by artists from RIXC and Renewable Network, as well as contributions by other symposium participants.
The Day 1 (July 27) will include RENEWABLE LAB workshops conducted by artists and scientists. The scientists from The Solid State Physics Institute will be demonstrating and testing their hydrogen cars and experimenting with other hydrogen and bio-energy technologies. The scientists from Biology Faculty together with RIXC artists will conduct a workshop on next generation bio-technology (MFC) and will show how to build 'bacteria-battery'. The workshop on Resilient Technologies in Urban (and Rural) Agriculture will introduce how to build hydrophonic gardening systems, while other workshops proposed by participants will explore “electrosmog” as energy resource, how to build DIY solar cells and other alternative energy technologies.
The Day 2 (July 28) of the symposium will feature specific event – collaborative working session “BIOTRICITY – how to generate electricity from wastewater” that is related to “Future of Water” theme of the STUDIOLAB project (http://www.studiolabproject.eu). During the “studiolab” (artist studio + scientist laboratory) session artists and scientists will experiment with the MFC (microbial fuel cell) technology. It is based on a bio-electrochemical system that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by using microorganisms – bacteria found in the commonly available resource such as, for instance, wastewater. During “Biotricity” working session the participants will be experimenting with building bio-electricity generators outdoors – in pool water and soil, and 'bacteria battery' systems for artistic experimenting with sonification, visualization and technological aesthetics of 'bacteria-battery'.
2-days of the symposium will take place in Pedvale Open-Air museum, and the 3rd day – in Salinas farm (and on the road in-between Pedvale and Salinas, testing hydrogen car).
