Investigating the Language of Network Representations Workshop at ERG, October 2012
Event / workshop
Venue: ERG (École de Recherche Graphique) - Bruxelles
to Thursday, October 11, 2012 - 23:00
The first of a series of workshop organized by the "Investigating the Language of Network Representations" initiative in collaboration with the École de Recherche Graphique in Brussel. It took place in October in the “Master Atelier Pluridisciplinaire Pratiques Graphiques et Complexité Scientifique” at the erg.
The workshop involved three morning sessions with lectures and discussions, three afternoon sessions with creative exercises, and two full days of creative atelier. The lectures covered the following topics: conceptualization; conceptual frameworks; networks and network science; data and information visualization; the state-of-the-art of network visualizations; the language of graphics in general and that of network visualizations in particular; and the representation of dynamic and hierarchical networks. The practical exercises guided the participant in their exploration of alternative means for representing networks. This process followed an experimental methodology inspired by the incremental process of scientific “creation” of knowledge. In the final two day of creative atelier, the participants were asked to collect and juxtapose the material they developed in the previous days and produce a “scientific” poster through which to present their proposals.
More information on this workshop and the results can be found on the project website.
